Saturday Six 136 December 13

Well we had a wild time in Northern California this week…the storm of the decade!  School closures, business closures, moments without electricity (not us, love solar!) and internet (that was tough) but we made it through the ONE day (Thursday) and it has moved south – sorry LA and San Diego!

At the beginning of the week there were also several days of protesting in my very neighborhood…guess people got to keep Berkeley the center of civil disobedience.  And while I don’t comment on politics, religion, etc. I do believe people have the right to demonstrate, I DON’T believe they have the right to destroy property and many businesses and homes suffered unnecessarily.

Not a quiet week.

The best cure? Hot cocoa and some blog posts to read!  Here are my picks for this week.

[1] People often leave comments here on MWA with wishes that they had the money or freedom to travel.  My response is, look to your own backyard.  There are amazing, quirky, interesting things all around you.  You do not have to go across the globe to find them. It is something that we often take for granted, I know I have. It is something that Britany of Stars on the Ceiling explored in her post this week “How to Treat Home Like a Tourist and Always be Traveling.” Britany just completed an epic roadtrip to move from New York to Portland and she vowing to soak up every ounce of what Portland has to offer!

[2] I don’t have to look far in my own region to know there are many gems that I have either dismissed or have yet to discover. One of those spots is Truckee which Jenna of This Is My Happiness reminded me of in her post about this unique little town on the way to Lake Tahoe.  Tahoe is where many Northern Californians head to for skiing in the winter and lakeside retreats in the summer.  Truckee is a flyby town that is on the way to Tahoe and most people stop for groceries or gas or to put on snow tires.  Who knew it was also a great little town with fantastic restaurants? I didn’t! But thanks to Jenna that is a wrong that I would like to right in the near future.

[3] I am a morning person. I have a tendency to wake up ready to go.  I am not at my best in the evening and I usually go to bed around 9 p.m. – I know such a chicken! I know it sounds crazy but I feel so much more productive in the morning and I think waking up refreshed and happy makes a difference on how my whole day will be.  If you aren’t a morning person, you still have a chance to wake up happy with these tips from Destiny of The Journey. [Bonus, love this post from Chapter Friday on why you should consider being a morning person.]

[4] Last week I shared a post from Esther of Local Adventurer about the Roos ‘n More Zoo outside of Vegas (part 2 is even cuter!) but the post that really resonated with me the most was one she wrote about a sunset in Santorini. It is actually a lot of work to capture sunsets and sunrises, and while I am not the one usually doing it (I am the one playing photo assistant) I definitely enjoy the fruits of Mr. Misadventures labor. [And hey! I am actually going to have a portfolio site to send you to in the new year!]

[5] I am a fried chicken nut. I love it.  I don’t eat it very frequently because I am so often disappointed. If I am ever on death row I want my last meal to be fried chicken (don’t ask me how I got on death row…probably someone made bad fried chicken one too many times…) It seems like for my next fried chicken adventure I need to head to Son of a Gun, at least according to pal Kelly of Tasting Page.  The owner’s of L.A’s Animal opened this seafood restaurant with – if you read Kelly’s post – looks to be some really great dishes, plus a fried chicken sandwich.  If you are not a fried chicken place and you are doing a fried chicken sandwich it better be damn good and Kelly thinks it is!  My favorite fried chicken sandwich is Bakesale Betty, so I am eager to try the Son of a Gun version for comparison.

[6] Neither Mr. Misadventures and I like medicine. In fact that was one of the things I loved most about the Swiss health system when I worked over there as well as pharmacies in Switzerland and France, homeopathic options are supported as much as traditional medicine. We are lucky that grocery stores such as Whole Foods and our local grocery store, Berkeley Bowl, have extensive natural medicine sections.  Taking that one step further, I love the idea of making my own remedies from food.  I have never done this, but Susan of The View from Great Island shared an all natural DIY pineapple cough syrup that I am going to make the next time there is a cough going around our house.  I really love this idea!

A Little Dessert…

I’ve always got food on the brain, I saved a few links this week and when I put them together I have an outrageously good!

> As a starter from Living a Sunshine Life there are cilantro Tabasco deviled eggs.
> For my main course, I’ll have the braised oxtail ragu from The Kitchn.
> Dessert is a double whammy.  Salty deep dark chocolate brownies from David Lebovitz served with the salted butter caramel chocolate mousse from White on Rice Couple.
>
The next morning I want a nice cup of coffee with Girlichef’s bacon fat spice loaf.

Happenings in the Misadventures household

This coming Thursday Jessica has her final x-rays to see if she is all healed from her surgery.  Thank goodness as she is really driving us insane!  Waking us every morning between 5 and 6 because she wants to have free range of the house.  We want her to have roam free as well.  The ordeals with my cat started in the first week of July and since that time I have been pretty much home bound.  I cannot wait to get out and about again.  First up a quick trip to Seattle.

Bonus

– Three days left to enter the $750 PayPal cash giveaway – everyone needs holiday cash!

That’s it for this week!

How about you? What have you been up to?  Is there a really great post you read recently that you want to share?
